Weekly Tests Done Right: Marks, Ranks and Report Cards for Coaching Classes
Weekly tests only help if marks reach students and parents quickly. Here is a simple system for entering marks, showing ranks and sharing results.

Almost every good coaching class runs weekly or monthly tests. The test itself is easy. The slow part is what happens afterwards: checking papers, writing marks in a register, working out ranks and telling parents.
Where weekly tests go wrong
- Marks are written on paper and typed into Excel days later.
- Ranks are worked out by hand, so mistakes creep in.
- Parents only see results at the end of the term.
- Students who were absent are never followed up.
A better flow
- Create the test with the subject, standard and total marks.
- Enter marks once, right after checking. Mark absent students as absent, not as zero.
- Let the system work out averages and ranks so nobody has to do it by hand.
- Share a clear result with each student: marks, total, and where they stand in the batch.
Why absent should not be zero
A student who missed the test did not score zero. Recording absence separately keeps averages fair and tells you who needs a re-test.
What students and parents should see
- Marks and percentage for each test
- Progress over several tests, not only the last one
- Attendance next to marks, because low attendance often explains low marks
When students see their progress every week, they start comparing themselves with their own last result instead of only with others. That is the habit you want.
